Project: The Way of the Wildcard

Brief: To find stories of unlikely athletes who have defied the odds to reach success.

Output: Found over 300 stories which we whittled down to a shortlist of 20, then to a final four:

• John McAvoy - former prisoner turned Ironman and world-record holder.

• The O'Donovan brothers - from a small town in Ireland to Olympic medallists.

• Pro-mountain biker Casey Brown - grew up on a remote New Zealand island, now one of the most unique bikers on the scene.

• Sadat Kawawa - from carrying tourists’ kayaks in Uganda, to winning the first African Freestyle Kayaking championships.

The series was launched on Red Bull TV and YouTube and won two Realscreen awards and nomination for Grierson British Documentary Award.
